The Latest Video Game Adaptation: Until Dawn
The much-anticipated movie adaptation of the popular video game, Until Dawn, has finally hit theaters. Interestingly, director David F. Sandberg almost passed on this project. In a recent discussion, Sandberg opened up about his initial hesitations, particularly after experiencing intense backlash, including death threats, following the release of his superhero film, Shazam: Fury of the Gods.
“The fan reactions can be overwhelming, and I even received death threats after Shazam 2,” Sandberg expressed in an interview with GamesRadar. “Because of that experience, I was quite reluctant to dive back into another project based on an established IP.”
However, Sandberg found himself captivated by the script for Until Dawn, ultimately deciding to embrace the challenge. One key element that piqued his interest was the film’s innovative storytelling approach, where characters are ensnared in a time loop, confronting various terrors each night.
“I was genuinely impressed with the writers’ concept of the time loop, as it mirrors the gameplay experience and the impact of making different choices,” Sandberg noted. “It really embodies what the game is all about.”
Although some fans voiced their discontent over the film’s departure from the game’s original storyline, Sandberg stood firm in his approach, acknowledging the hurdles associated with a straightforward adaptation.
“Attempting to replicate the game exactly would have drawn heavy criticism. Viewers would likely compare it to the original and find it wanting. It would have been a difficult uphill battle,” he explained.
With a budget estimated at $15 million, Until Dawn is now screening in theaters and is projected to earn around $10 million in its opening weekend in the US, according to box office forecasts. So, whether you’re a die-hard fan of the game or simply in search of an exciting cinematic experience, make sure to catch Until Dawn on the big screen.
