Kenan Thompson Opens Up About His Battle with GERD

Kenan Thompson, the beloved comedian known for his work on “Saturday Night Live,” has recently shared his personal experience with GERD, a digestive issue he describes as “no joke.” In a heartfelt interview, Thompson discussed how the challenging symptoms of GERD, including heartburn and difficulties with swallowing, have significantly affected his daily life.

Thompson’s journey with GERD began in his mid-30s when he started to suffer from severe heartburn that disrupted his sleep and impacted his vocal performance during comedy routines. After experimenting with various over-the-counter treatments that provided only short-term relief, he turned to his doctor, who recommended Voquezna (vonoprazan) for effective long-term management.

Now in his early 40s, Thompson has successfully managed his GERD, allowing him to relish his favorite meals without the anxiety of potential flare-ups. He is actively participating in the “GERD IS NO JOKE” campaign, aiming to raise awareness and support others who might be silently dealing with this condition.

In addition to medication, Thompson has adopted dietary changes to further alleviate his GERD symptoms. Registered dietitian nutritionist Anna Beery advises that a diet focusing on plant-based foods—rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats like olive oil—may help reduce GERD symptoms. She also recommends keeping a food diary to pinpoint specific trigger foods and encourages practicing mindful eating habits, such as consuming smaller meals throughout the day and avoiding lying down right after eating.

Everyone’s experience with GERD is unique, with various triggers and symptoms that can differ widely among individuals. By sharing his journey and raising awareness, Kenan Thompson hopes to assist others in finding relief from the discomfort of GERD and help them lead more comfortable lives.
