In a troubling development, Italian journalist Cecilia Sala has been detained in Tehran while covering the evolving situation in Iran. Sala, who writes for Il Foglio and contributes to Chora Media’s podcast, was arrested on December 19 and spent a week in solitary confinement.

The Italian foreign ministry is actively engaged in monitoring her situation, working alongside Iranian authorities to understand the legal circumstances surrounding her arrest. Despite being in Iran on a standard journalist visa, Sala has been allowed to make two calls to her family and has received a visit from Italy’s ambassador, Paola Amadei, at Evin prison.

Evin prison, notorious for housing individuals accused of serious security offenses, has drawn significant criticism for its human rights record. Sala’s detention has ignited widespread concern among journalists and advocates, prompting urgent calls for her immediate release.

With a robust social media presence and frequent appearances on Italian television, Sala has reported on numerous international conflicts and crises. Both government officials and opposition leaders in Italy are pressing for rapid action to facilitate her return home.

Although Iranian authorities have yet to formally confirm Sala’s arrest, the country has a history of leveraging detainees with Western connections in diplomatic negotiations. The situation remains precarious as efforts intensify to secure her freedom and ensure her well-being.
